Dr. Nawal Boukli, professor in the Microbiology and Immunology departments and director of the Biomedical Proteomics Facility at the Universidad Central del Caribe, has been recognized by the peer reviewed journal PLOS ONE. The journal announced that Dr. Boukli article “Targeting multiple pro-apoptotic signaling pathways with curcumin in prostate cancer cells” (PLoS ONE 12(6): e0179587), is among the top 10% most cited papers. https://bit.ly/3y95KM0

Since 2016, PLOS ONE articles have collectively been cited 787,804 times by scientists and readers worldwide and Dr. Boukli has contributed to that citation milestone, according to PLOS ONE’s Editor in Chief, Emily Chenette.

Dr. Boukli study analyzes curcumin’s anticancer effects on prostate cancer. The findings of this article using for the first time in highly metastatic human prostate cancer PC-3 cells, a shotgun quantitative proteomic analysis coupled with TMT isobaric labeling, revealed that curcumin induced an Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) stress-mediated cell death/apoptosis in prostate cancer cells. Study data suggest that curcumin may serve as a promising anticancer agent by inducing a chronic ER stress mediated cell death and activation of cell cycle arrest, increased reactive oxygen species, autophagy, and the Unfolded Protein Response.
