Biochemistry Department

The Biochemistry Department of Universidad Central del Caribe was founded in 1976. Three of the original four founding faculty members still serve full-time in the department. The Biochemistry Department faculty members are all dedicated researcher-educators who serve the departmental mission. The Biochemistry Department supervises a major first-year medical degree program course, Biochemistry & Cell Biology, as well as several graduate degree program courses. The Biochemistry Department offers an MS degree in biochemistry, while Biochemistry Department faculty members also participate as teachers and mentors in the Molecular Cell Biology and Neuroscience PhD programs. The Biochemistry Department provides research opportunities both to graduate students and to medical students under the supervision of Biochemistry Department faculty members.  Numerous medical and graduate students have had rewarding research experiences in the faculty labs over the past few years.

Mission

The mission of the Biochemistry Department is to advance the understanding of biological processes at the molecular level through research and education.

Research

The Biochemistry Department faculty members conduct original research in such diverse areas as neuroprotection, glial cell function, neuronal-glial networks, membrane receptor surface expression, glial cell ion channels, nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, neural cell differentiation and cancer cell metastasis and survival.
